Past Events - 2008

October 9, 2008 - CMHA-NL's Second Annual Fundraising Gala

In recognition of Mental Illness Awareness Week (October 5 - 11, 2008), CMHA-NL held an evening of dinner and entertainment at our Second Annual Fundraising Gala at the Delta Hotel, St. John's. See the original Gala flyer for more details.

Nearly 200 people joined CMHA-NL Staff and Board at the Gala. We have received numerous rave reviews for the performances by both Joel Hynes and Ron Hynes, as well as the fantastic meal. It was an enjoyable night for all!

Some highlights of the evening:
  • CMHA-NL recognizes the following individuals:
    • Ms. Sharon Barnes, a long serving CMHA board member and volunteer with CMHA at the national and provincial levels is this year's recipient of the Pottle Award in recognition of her outstanding contribution to CMHA-NL and mental health in general.
    • Mr. Edward Greenspon, the Editor of the Globe and Mail, was the recipient of this year's Media award for outstanding achievement and contribution in addressing issues pertaining to mental health care and mental illness in our country. This was evidenced by the recent week-long series in the Globe and Mail on mental illness in Canada.
    • CMHA-NL would like to acknowledge its support for local mental health research being conducted in the Faculty of Medicine. Mr. Jeff Kelland, a Master's student, has received a research grant from CMHA-NL to critically examine the state of mental health research in Canada.
    • In total we raised almost $16,000.00 that evening.

CMHA-NL would like to thank all those who participated and made it such a special and successful evening. Click here to read our thank-you to our sponsors and partners.
